At a young age, when my dad was still part of my life, I remember him telling me that I would be a prettier girl if I tried harder. This stuck with me to the point that I would try to make myself invisible, not pretty at all. Our society taught me that as someone who identifies as female my value comes from how I look. At 14, my first job was pushing carts and bagging groceries. While pushing a line of carts into the store an older man told me I should smile. It made me want to frown and glare and glower. Am I more than my face, my body, and how i can make a man feel? Can I feel pretty and smile and be sexy and sexual without fear and shame? When will my body be my own?
